2026 marks 30 years since the creation of Tomb Raider and its heroine, Lara Croft, by Derby games studio Core Design. Since her debut in 1996, Lara Croft has become one of the most recognisable female characters in video game history.

To celebrate the anniversary, Derby Museums is turning Pickfords’ House into Croft Manor for a new exhibition co-curated with collector Luke Earle.

Featuring original Tomb Raider development materials on loan from former Core Design developers, memorabilia and collectables from private collections, interactive activities, and themed ‘cosplay’ days throughout the exhibition.

Over the last 30 years, Lara Croft has become one of the most recognisable female characters in gaming history, from Derby to Global icon.

Now, as part of the ‘Lara Croft: 30 Years On’ exhibition, we’re inviting fans and enthusiasts alike to explore Pickfords’ House in costume and take photos within this historic Grade I listed building.

Cosplay days will take place at set dates throughout the exhibition.

Please note, Pickford’s House has minimal changing spaces and flash photography is prohibited as part of the event.

Tomb Raider: Legend turns 20 today!

To celebrate this round anniversary, we uncovered an ancient artefact for all digital archaeologists in the Tomb Raider community; a never-before-seen early development playthrough footage of a level from Tomb Raider: Legend.

At the beginning of development, Crystal Dynamics created their own version of the Lara Croft model from Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness with the intention of keeping the iconic aspects of her character. This model was used as the base model for early concept art and gameplay testing before Toby Gard joined the team and played a major role in Lara’s redesign along with character artist Kam Yu. That is why the Angel of Darkness model appears in this video playthrough.

The level opens with Lara leaping from a helicopter into a warzone territory, searching for a map hidden inside a temple. This level represents an early version of what would later become the Bolivia level. 

FURTHERMORE, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is writing, executive producing and showrunner.

I won't be watching and I don't watch anything by her.

She ruined James Bond and then ruined Indiana Jones.

Challenge Mode: New Game Mode added to the Main Menu for Tomb Raider I, II, and III.

Navigate to: Tomb Raider I, II, or III / Game Menu (passport) / Mode / Challenge Mode 

Replay classic levels in new ways: Lara can now replay completed levels. Each completed level will have level customization modifiers for new and exciting challenges.

Challenge Mode Modifier Options:

Select Region

Select Chapter

Select Outfit: Once you’ve unlocked new outfits with new effects, they will appear here.

Use Outfit Bonus: Choose whether to use the outfit’s unique effects in this level.

Lara’s Health: Choose Lara’s Max Health during the Level 10%–500%. Default value is 100%.

Lara’s Regen: Choose the rate of Lara’s Regeneration, -5hp/s–100hp/s. Default value is 0.

Unlimited Air: Choose Lara’s ability to breathe underwater. Default value is No.

Equipment: Choose Lara's Medkit and Ammo loadout. This will not affect any keys or Level relevant Items.

Additional Weapon: Choose which additional weapon Lara will start the level. Default value is no additional weapons.

Enemy Health: Choose enemy health, 25%–250%. Default value is 100%.

Enemy Damage: Choose the amount of damage enemies will deal in the level, 25%–250%. Default value is 100%

Enemy Numbers: Choose the amount of Enemies present in the Level. Default value is 100%

Enemy Type: Options will change depending on the level. Choose different kinds of enemies to face off against in the level.

Check your Challenge Rating: Each modifier will alter challenge rating of the level, granting various rewards and bragging rights. 

Challenge Mode can be used as a level selector by selecting no modifiers.

Challenge Mode restarts each level as a “starting over” experience where all items gathered in previous levels (medi-packs/weapons/ammo) will be removed. Without modifiers, Lara starts with only basic Pistols.

Unlock New Outfits with Challenge Mode! 

To understand how to unlock each new outfit, navigate to: Tomb Raider I, II, or III / Game Menu (passport) / Extras / Outfit. 

Each new outfit comes with unique bonuses and effects! These effects will only be available in Challenge Mode.
