Mick
Maybe key is stuck down and when you bash the keyboard is pops up a bit and allows the other keys to work. Do you have to push down extra hard to get the key to work? Most keyboard use a soft silicon rubber under the hard plastic key cap. The soft silicon presses down on carbon contacts on the PCB material. If carbon coating as has been damage by liquids or corrosion, then you it needs replacing. Keyboards for laptops usually easy to replace. Although make sure it not a software problem first.
