What Really Happened to Core Design?

Featured Replies

Thought this would be a good thing to keep for people to read =)

Trinity34's post

UK's Edge Magazine premieres an exclusive interview with Core Design's, Gavin Rummery.

The Angel of Darkness seemed like the angel of death for the studio which created Lara Croft. Now, Core breaks its silence and speaks out. If a diplomat is someone who thinks twice before saying nothing, then Core's studio manager Gavin Rummery is well prepared for a career with the Foreign Office. Ask him what life has been like for Core over the last three years - three years that saw Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness savaged by the press, the franchise shipped out to Crystal Dynamics, its old owner Eidos up for sale, its new owners SCi's decide to put Core on the market and its recent purchase by what is now the UK's biggest independent developer, Rebellion.

Thanks to Lara man for the scans. wink.gif This is the August issue of Edge Magazine.

Interesting read, thanks for the scan LM :)

Seems to me that Eidos are a shower of money-grabbing bastards, (which we knew), but that Core messed up too with their organisation. I'm sure 6 months would have made quite a big difference to AOD, but Legend is so boss it seems that things have worked out ok in the end.

Not everyone will agree..

I'm going to have to agree. Also, what companies aren't 'money-grabbing bastards'. Most companies are these days, because that's how they expand, and grow. I expect that, the most common question ever asked by new business owners is, "Now, how am I going to make money?", as money makes the world go around as they say.

I also have no idea why Eidos fired Core for relesaing it un-finished in the first place. Judging by that article, Core had 130 employees to make a next-gen game ASAP. Eidos rushed them, and it was probably someone from their office that leaked AOD in the first place. So I believe that Eidos are the ones that need a good talking to, not Core.
