Mirror's Edge

Featured Replies

You guys have got to check out this teaser trailer of this interesting game. http://www.gametrailers.com/player/33585.html

More info here: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/855/855856p1.html

Mirror's Edge, from DICE the creators of the celebrated Battlefield series, presents players with a familiar setting. There's a giant city, you can go anywhere, leaping your way up and across the face of buildings, scaffolds, and generally anywhere that you can see. The twist? It's all delivered through one of the most active first-person displays that we've ever seen.

More info from different sources:

From Videogamer.com http://www.videogamer.com/xbox360/mirrors_...review-912.html

- PS3 version will utilize the Sixaxis controls.

- The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will have a display resolution of 1280x720 a.k.a 720p.

- Weapons will just slow you down and are mainly used as melee tools.

- The game isn't about combat, the game is about movement.

There are guns but they're tools. Imagine trying to do this running with a big automatic rifle - not going to happen. So, what you're able to do is you're able to take weapons off of people if you can disarm them in the right way. You can use whatever is in the clip but you can't run very fast, you can't do all the things that you really want to do. So it's more of a tool to get through things, blow open a section of window, take out one person, throw it away and keep moving.

From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirror%27s_Edge

With such a heavy focus on movement, it is imperative to maintain momentum, which is done by an uninterrupted, fluid flow of actions, creating a chain of moves. Failing to string these moves together results in a loss of momentum, which can mean that Faith falls off or short of an object if a certain level of momentum is required to transverse it. Controls are simplified by being context-sensitive; the "up" button will cause Faith to transverse an obstacle by passing over it—for example, by jumping, vaulting, climbing, or grabbing set pieces like zip lines—while the "down" button will cause her to perform other manoeuvres like slides or somersaults.

In order to assist the player in creating these chains of moves, the game employs a system called "Runner Vision", which derives its name from its purpose: to depict the environment the way a runner would see it, instantly recognising escape routes. It is a highlighting system that emphasises environmental pieces useful for progression—like pipes, ramps, and enterable doors—with the colour red as Faith approaches, though it does not always indicate the best route. Further along in the game, the number of these visual hints is reduced to only indicate the end goal, though the player can opt to turn off this hint system entirely. It will also be used to create puzzles in which the player must figure out how to combine the highlighted set pieces into a chain of moves in order to reach the target. Another means of assistance to the player is a system called "Reaction Time", which is a form of bullet time that allows the player time to plan where to go next without losing momentum.

Although the player character can hold weapons, O'Brien stressed that "this is an action adventure. We're not positioning this as a shooter - the focus isn't on the gun, it's on the person." Gameplay in Mirror's Edge will focus on finding the best route through the games environments while combat takes a secondary role. Consequently, guns may be obtained by disarming an enemy, but when the magazine is empty, it will need to be discarded. Additionally, carrying a weapon slows Faith down and the heavier the gun, the more it hinders her movement, which introduces an element of strategy in determining when to trade agility for short-term firepower.

UPDATE

... and I quote http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/17606/Mirror...Bonus-Revealed/

Electronic Arts announced today that Mirror’s Edge™ will ship on November 11 in the United States. The publisher also revealed that prior to launch, players worldwide will get an early peek at the game when the demo becomes available via Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store. The demo will feature the prologue of the game including the tutorial and a segment of the single-player story mode.

Time Trial mode challenges players to find the fastest route across the rooftops and through the streets. Players can upload their best time to the Mirror’s Edge leaderboards for their friends to download and compete against. Players can see their friend’s ‘ghost’ run as they race their way through the course to the top of the leaderboards.

Additionally, starting September 26, players who pre-order Mirror’s Edge at selected retailers will get an exclusive code that unlocks the Time Trial mode in the demo.

Anyone try the demo yet?

I tried it today and I liked what I saw and played. Controls were quite intuitive. I'm looking forward to playing the full retail version come next week.

Demo available for 360 and PS3 (not too sure if there is a PC demo however).

Yup!

I enjoyed the Demo, can't wait for the whole game. I'm not too good with First Person games, but this one I actually did pretty good, just trying to play the demo here and there to get use to it for when it comes out.

"The story follows Faith and her struggle to free her sister from a corrupt government. Her parents were killed while protesting against the government and she was forced to grow up on the street. One day, when she was still a young girl, she broke into an office belonging to a man named Mercury, who caught her but was impressed with her skills. Mercury then trained Faith as a runner. Faith was taught not to rely on modern forms of communication, partially because they are monitored by the police state. As Faith attempts to rescue her sister while running messages for the criminal underworld, she gets caught up in a series of events which lead to her being pursued by the totalitarian government. Acting as Faith's guide is Mercury, who will help Faith in her attempt to outwit and overcome the many government agents that are out to eliminate her."

Had the day off today and put in some serious gaming hours for Mirror's Edge and I'm really impressed with it thus far. I bought the PS3 version since this type of game calls for a large and widescreen TV format.

I initially wanted to go the pacifist route but there were times when I wanted to just shoot and did shoot those (corrupt) cops down; they're telling me to stop running and yet, they're also firing at me..... Fighting is best kept to a minimum and disarming cops and guards is always a treat to watch. In the latter case, you have to isolate them otherwise you'll simply be overwhelmed in no time. There is more of a sense of satisfaction in disarming and incapacitating the enemy rather than simply gunning them down. You also have the option of simply running past them in some cases.

As for the parkour aspect of the game, keeping your momentum is key and looking ahead as to where you must and can go is key if you're to survive the onslaught of cops, not to mention some choppers trying to gun you down from the sky. The acrobatic and platforming aspect reminds me a lot of The Prince of Persia trilogy but is played only in the first person point of view.

Well, that's it for now......

Played a bit more, well actually, not a bit, a lot more, and I must say that there's a certain satisfaction when you have strung together a number of moves to overcome the obstacles you see before you and that's where the immersive factor really shines in this game --- very cool!

Momentum is certainly key here and quickly finding the right line of sight makes your escape all the more fluid and exciting.

I want to try this game. Ms. Croft and I talked about it before! Have to check if there's a PC demo...

Sounds great,

BPanther

Hey jedicri, what Chap are you on? I actually got to played some this morning before going to work, got to chap 4 and I really like it. There are 9 Chapters total. it's funny when you are chasing Jacknife in Chap 2 when he jumps across the building grabs the pole and it snaps, so he falls to the floor hahaha that was pretty funny to me. Darn, now I have to find another way to get to him. On Chap 3 (Ropeburn's Office) gosh I died I don't know how many freakin times lol those damn SWAT units but I'm still trying my best lol not so good at First Person games unfortunately ;)

Also, there is a "Studio Series Guide" which contains behind the scenes content, concept art, interviews with the developers, photo tour of the dice studio, plus it also contains the complete strategy guide.

When I reserved the game, they said they would give out the Mirro's Edge Messenger Courier Bag (Runner's Bag) and unfortunately at the GameStop I reserved it at told me that they had them and didn't have any anymore RIP OFF!!! I made them call another GameStop (sometimes the emplyees cheat and give them to their friends so by the time the people that actually reserved the game all of the sudden "they don't know what happened") and picked it up:

Purple,

I've just started Chapter 7; yes, sadly I'm almost done. I'm not bashing the length of the game ----- I simply want more! I temporarily stopped playing Fable 2, Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 and I'm concentrating all my energy to finishing Mirror's Edge

The story itself made some unexpected twists and turns. It is also because of this, other than the innovative style of playing, that makes me want to play to the very end.

Check out this playable 2-D version demo:

BP,

I believe the PC version is out next year (January 9?, not too sure).

Edited by jedicri

I played and finished it in one day, but with a game so focused on moving fast I wasn't expecting length so that doesn't bother me too much.

I liked it overall, I found the story quite intriguing, if not confusing at times, but I guessed the twists spot on mostly due to the limited number of characters, but the twists weren't important to the gameplay.

I liked the acrobatics and fighting and after discovering that there's a trophy for not firing a gun at anybody I thought I'd go for it. It's extremely frustrating during the later parts of the game, but I liked the challenge.

Overall a good game, but would I recommend someone pay full price for it? To be honest, no, wait for it to drop in price in my opinion.

Finally finished the game yesterday and I'm satisfied with the overall gameplay.

I would have liked to have not shot a single weapon but honestly, those guys were really getting on my nerves --- had to permanently put them down, lol. I loved doing the sniper sessions.

On a related note, the PC version of Mirror's Edge has been optimized to take advantage of NVIDIA's PhysX technology. This takes the game to a "new level of realism and immersive action: simulated cloth with tearing, weapons that cause physical damage and debris, physical smoke as well as environmental effects like leaves and trash blowing in the wind." Such things are not available on the 360 and PS3 versions.

Check out the PC version Trailer featuring Physx:

I was JUST reading about this in a magazine today! It looks awesome, but I'm a tad skeptical for some reason. I really want to play it, and I hope it's as cool as it looks.

PC version is now available; it also comes with the game's Remix Album.

The Patch (which addresses freezing issues when PhysX is enabled in the game options) may be downloaded:

Although I already have the PS3 version, I picked up the PC version and so far, it looks beautiful and runs very well too.
