Game won't save properly

I save my progress after checkpoints when I play TR games. Had no problems with this at all throughout Anniversary, for example. Now, in Underworld, my progress is not saving. For example, when I last played I had just killed the kraken. Once I got the checkpoint I made sure to save. I just went back to continue play and it loaded me at that underwater gate with the steering wheel bars I had to retrieve. I checked my storage capacity and there is plenty. I tried saving in a different slot, same problem. AAARRRRGGGHHH!!! I'm very frustrated.

Help!!!
