Next-Gen Sequel to Tomb Raider Confirmed!

Featured Replies

Good morning all! Some great news from Darrell Gallagher, Head of Product Development and Studios, below.*

“Hi - you may have read today that a next-generation sequel to Tomb Raider is in the works. We’re very excited to confirm that the team has started working on telling the next chapter in Lara’s tale. It’s still early days, so I’m afraid I can’t provide any further details for now save my assurance that we’re not resting on our laurels and acclaim from Tomb Raider’s recent successes, but working hard to raise the bar even higher and re-affirm the faith you’ve shown.”

The sequel was mentioned on a blog from Phil Rogers today. To read the complete blog, which has some great insight into Square-Enix's future plans,

I wonder how long until we actually start hearing some details. Part of me thinks since they've put in so much work on revamping the game engine, the sequel will go more quickly. But then there's the next-gen factor. How much of what they did for the last game will have to be redone for PS4/Xbox One? I'm so tech ignorant.

Great question! I heard that the PS4 is backwards compatible but the Xbox is not. I imagine things will be bumped at much as possible

to make it worth the investment. I'm more concerned if we'll get a more adventurous game as opposed to a combative game this time.

I enjoyed the new game but I felt there was way too much resistance and adventuring was secondary. I know there were bonus tombs

to investigate but I would prefer the adventuring to take center stage on the next game and perhaps have actual Tomb Raiding more than

in name only. I think back to basics would be a big hit with everyone in a big way.

I agree 100%. More puzzles, less combat--or at least more varied combat. In the old games--even the previous Crystal Dynamics games--there were animals, insects, bats, etc., not to mention supernatural entities. This one was just one dirty, smelly dude after another. The combat mechanics were great, once you got used to them, but the battles were too many and too tedious.

The challenge tombs were fun enough, except that they were too well marked and Lara kept interrupting to try and "help" me if I didn't solve the puzzle within 30 seconds. ;) I miss the days when you couldn't move on to the next area until you figured out some big, complicated puzzle. There were a few like that (the room with the bell and the shutters, the dangling cage near the end, etc.) but not nearly as many as I'd like. I want to get lost. I want to bang my head against a puzzle for a while before I finally have that ah-ha moment. I want to fight the final boss, not kill him in an epic QTE.

Do I sound like a curmudgeon? I guess I am. I don't want to come off as only complaining though. There were a lot of things I loved about the game. Fast travel is brillant. The weapon and skill upgrades were just about perfect. I liked documents, relics, and GPS caches--plus all the challenges like the egg poaching, flag burning, etc. The levels were gorgeous, and the controls were excellent. No more random, uncontrollable camera moments! I hope we'll get more of that and less of the other in the next game.

Well put! The one area I found formidable was in the shanty town where it wasn't how many you killed but rather how many in a certain matter of time for them to stop.

I had a great vantage point and they just kept on coming and out of frustration I simply just madly went on a rampage and achieved success!
