Has Anyone Else Been Less than Stunned w/ the Visuals in SOTTR?

Featured Replies

After I upgraded my XB1 to the Xbox One-X and bought an amazing 60” 4K UHDTV, I replayed ROTR enhanced for the XB1-X. I was amazed at how much better that game looked and played. In fact, the enhanced version had two 4K/HDR settings: one that favored the best possible visuals, and the other favoring the highest possible frame-rate. The higher frame-rate setting did make the gameplay somewhat smoother and more responsive, but for me the immersion into that story and that world were vastly improved by the enhanced visuals. Again, the detail and richness in HDR was simply jaw-dropping.

That said, I was expecting better visuals in SOTTR. I figured this new game would have to look better, since it was developed for 4K/HDR, and not enhanced like ROTR. If I’m being honest, however, as fantastic as this game looks in UHD, I don’t think it’s an improvement over ROTR. In fact, there have been times when I didn’t think the visuals in SOTTR were as rich and textured as the enhanced version of ROTR.

has anyone else felt this way?

Too poor, can't afford X1X and/or 4k TV so  to me visuals all look same XD.

But I've seen other threads and site said visuals wern't as "OHMERGUHD" as the previous one. So other people have noticed the same.

Thanks. Good to know it’s not just me. Maybe they’ll release a patch or an enhanced 4K/HDR version to enhance the native 4K format.

I don’t mean to rub my 4K upgrade in people’s faces. It is a substantial financial investment. One I really couldn’t afford myself. I justified it by skipping my vacation, and then I made a deal with myself, wherein  any freelance writing I sold (during a specific timeframe) would be found money. Subsequently, this has been one of those rare purchases where have no buyer’s remorse. Once I saw how much the visuals, the sound, and the performance were improved, I knew it was worth it.

On a related note, there are those who believe 4K/HDR UHD equipment isn’t all it’s cracked out to be. The logic here is that the human eye can only process a certain amount of detail and a certain range of colors. So if the eye can’t see in 4K, what good is 4K equipment. The same argument has been made for UHD 4K digital cameras.

That said, I honestly don’t careabout the limitations of the eye; I just know that everything I do in 4K looks amazingly better.

I didn't think you were rubbing it in lol.  Im one of the people who like you said, can't tell any diffrence between blue ray, 4k, and SD ?

I don't have 4K but already posted that in some ways the game doesn't look as good as "Rise".  It actually looks like normal definition that has been fudged to make it look like HD and that is without even considering 4K.  A screenshot shows clearly that it really is 1920x1080 when delivered to the screen but it still looks like soft focus.  This is on two different Xbox One systems connected to two different TVs (which are set to "computer"/whatever).  I could be really cynical and suggest they've deliberately done that so a side-by-side comparison of HD and 4K means there is no comparison.

In PS4, on a regular 1080 TV, there are some shots of Lara, especially in daylight, that look very poorly rendered. There was nothing like that in ROTTR. And I had just finished playing the PS4 version of ROTTR just before I got SOTTR.

The message I got on the official forums is that PS4 should have 1080 as standard so if that is looking bad . . . well, I definitely think "Rise" looks better with my set-up.  Not good.
