My sister went on holiday to Spain recently, and while she was there she had a bunch of photos (200+) written to CD. Unfortunately it seems that the CD is corrupt and all the photos are unreadable except for the first 7 or so on the disc. It appears to be a cyclic redundundancy check error (not that I know that much what that means, but there you go).

I've tried a few programmes (ISOBuster, CD Check, Unstoppable Copier, one or two others) but none of them has worked. Anyone have any other programmes or suggestions for a good way to get the pictures off the CD, or are they gone forever?

Any help would be appreciated

It's worth trying the CD in several other CD drives tho'.. In some situations I've known that to work (some are more fussy then others. I once had a CD drive that could even read cracked CDs to a certain point!)

However, even if another CD drive can retrive more photos, it sounds like most of the CD is corrupted : ( Sorry to hear that!

We've tried the CD in a few drives now (two PCs, one Apple Mac, an X-Box 360, and a DVD-player), and all the drives stop reading it at the same point. The data recovery programmes were a last resort. So I guess they're gone then.

instead of letting the disc drive autorun have you tried clicking on my computer/drive/explore to see if anything shows in the cd folder?

if it does then you can copy and paste from the cd to your hd

My experience with that type of error is bad... I could never get them back! Really sorry about all the photos though... I would be very sad.

Tip for next time you burn a cd: verify the compilation once it's done.

Yeah, my sis & her BF are extremely annoyed that they didn't get the photo place to check the disc. They only had to get the photos written there because one of their memory cards went missing just after they arrived in Spain and they only found out after the first card was full (and they had a helicopter ride booked in a few hours, and they couldn't find anywhere that sold the memory cards they needed). Otherwise they would've just brought them to my place when they got back and I'd've written the pictures for them (and made sure they were working).

are you using CTRL X or CTRL C to Copy?

Try CTRL C instead of CTRL X

lol, I know that you can't cut off of a CD It doesn't work though because the files can't be read at all If I open the CD and turn thumbnails on, Windows Explorer hangs. When I tried to copy it aborted and gave me an error message.

My sis is going to take the CD into her work and give it to a friend of hers who works in the IT department. Perhaps he'll be able to do something with the data-recovery stuff they have (might work better than the cheap freeware/demo programmes I had).
