OXM Reveals Tomb Raider Multiplayer In January Cover Story

Yep, you read it right. The January issue of OXM has revealed a secret addition to Tomb Raider, and one a long-time in the making. While Crystal Dynamics has been hard at work crafting and polishing the single-player experience, our sister studio Eidos Montreal has been working tirelessly to introduce multiplayer to the world of Tomb Raider.

Inspired by the overwhelmingly positive response to co-op play in Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, we’ll have many more details about Tomb Raider’s multiplayer offering come CES in early January. Issue #145 of OXM also dives deep into single player content and combat.

Can we all take a second to admire how beautiful the cover art is? You can thank Brian Horton for the lovely piece above starring Lara and Roth.

I hope you guys are as excited as I am! I can’t wait to play with fellow fans online come launch day.

How is it going to work?

Like I said before when Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness, the first Tomb Raider game for the then new Sony Playstation 2, was still in development and there was plans to bring multi-player to Lara's world, I remember saying:

"I don't think having a couple of dozen Lara running around the screen like crazy fighting for one artifact or trying to get through the trap door is going to work"

How is exactly going to work?

20 Lara shooting at 5 goons and after the goons are dead, 20 Lara with nothing to do?

Tomb Raider is not exactly a first person shooter game where the numbers of enemies you can shoot at is almost infinite like in Call of Duty or Halo.

Or is everyone going to race for the lever and the trap door and the first couple of Lara through it go on to the next level and the other Lara who don't make it just get stuck together, locked away forever in the same chamber?

Or are the Lara just going to kill each other?

Will they be able to kill each other?

I played FPS online and there is always one person in the COOP game session who doesn't play COOP and ruins it for everyone else by killing you instead of shooting at the A.I. controlled enemies.

lol That's why they want you to buy the mag!

We'll find out soon. I'm assuming someone has to be one of the characters. I doubt everyone can be Lara.

I didn't play the multi-player of Guardian of Light but I guess it involves the same premise.

Personally I prefer playing just me,myself and I and will enjoy the game as I would normally.

I just never felt that Tomb Raider was a multi-player game but I'm old school that way.

If it was Like Mortal Kombat then that's another story.

Yeah, I don't know about multiplayer, I mean, the co-op was great fun in Guardian of Light, but that wasn't one of the major titles.

The main series should be enjoyed as a single player experience. It adds to the feeling of isolation and really gets you emotionally attached.

I feel like multiplayer is just a huge cash cow these days -- it seems like nearly every game has some sort of multiplayer option, not that its a bad thing, it's just not necessary sometimes.

Wild guess: it could be something in a fashion of Uncharted (2-3) with different match types, eg. basic elimination/deathmatch and possibly some additional modes where you need to find all the treasures and carry them to your own headquarters before the opposing team. And since there are going to be multiple main characters in the new Tomb Raider, we already have the good guys team, and the island's weird inhabitants obviously are the bad guys.

Btw I used to say to my brother "Always raid alone" when he was struggling to protect his allies in a game... So much for those days... Oh well, shouldn't be such a smart-ass anyhoo. Let's just say this news surprised me though :D

And I agree with Morp in that the Guardian of Light isn't a very good comparison. As the developers made clear, it was not a Tomb Raider title, and I feel that the only thing it has in common with the Tomb Raider series is the main character. Quite honestly GoL isn't a very amazing single player game... Only times I play GoL is in multiplayer mode with a good friend.
