I've got a problem with my pc monitor - when the pc boots up, the windows logo comes on and then..............darkness! the monitor just goes really dark - you can just make out certain icons on the desktop if you look really hard - so, I've a feeling my monitor may simply be ready for the knackers yard as the pc tower boots up ok and everything is still there, you just can't see it.

I've tried a couple of things already:-

unplugging the monitor completely and re-connecting

fiddling with the menu buttons on the actual monitor - brightness, contrast etc. to no avail.

Any ideas anyone?

do you have another PC even an old one that you no longer use but still bootable?

Connect the monitor to a different PC, If it works there, you have a problem with the video card in the original PC.

If it doesn't, replace the monitor.

I don't know if you got this fixed yet but...If the monitor works until Windows kicks in, it could be the Windows video settings. You say you see a latent image. If you can see enough to do this...right click the desktop then go to PROPERTIES in the menu that pops up. Then go to the SETTINGS tab and press the ADVANCED button. Find the tab that has your video card settings and search for the Brightness control.

If thats not it, try to see if you borrow another monitor to hook up to your computer, if that works you should get a new monitor.

The next thing would be the video card.

thx for your help guys - glad to say my monitor is fine - had a problem with my display adapter apparently - it vanished - lol!

I can't complain really, my pc is very old - I should treat myself to a more high spec machine soon, but while it's running ok, i'll keep plodding along.
