That's just ridiculous! I've always used Windows, and always trained on it, so I'm ticked. In order to upgrade our computers at home legally, we'd need 5 licenses!!!!! Are you crazy???? Maybe I'll just buy it for my main PC and not tell the rest of the house. Shhhh

If you compare to Windows XP (when XP was first launched):

Home Basic $199 = XP Home $199

Home Premium $239 is only $40 more and you get Media Center & Aero.

Business $299 = XP Pro $299

Ultimate $399 is a completely new category.

I pre-ordered my Ultimate Upgrade for $199 plus 1 day shipping. In total I spent $249.99. If I would have bought my PC just 2 days later I would had qualified for a free Vista upgrade. Didn't know that then!

It's not as bad as you think. Some legitimate places online have Vista a lot cheaper than the retail price.

Thanks for the info & link, Mike. I know that the prices compared to XP aren't that bad. It's just that by the time you multiply it by all the computers in the house, it gets to be quite expensive. We'll probably do it one at a time, like we did with XP. It's not like we need it on our laptops right away, anyway, so we're probably looking at getting 3 licensed copies over a few months -- one for me, one for my husband, and one for the kids' pc. I NEVER buy anything but legal copies of Windows. It's not just the fact that Microsoft might come and 'take me away'. It's also that I know a lot of hours go into making a product, no matter how many upcoming fixes there will be, so I'd feel guilty just cheating my way around it.

I just wish they took into account that many families have several pc's, and gave a license discount for something smaller than a business license amount. I'll check around and compare prices before we buy, of course.

I should note for anyone else that wants to install the Vista Advisor, it required that my MSXML and .Net framework files be installed and up-to-date. If you're not sure whether they are or not, it's not that hard. The advisor sends you to the download page from Microsoft for each of these items. On my desktop, these are current, but my laptop's kind of set up for basic, no frills use, so I had to update.

*Edit: Yep, I was right...the Advisor said the only hardware change I needed to make was to add more RAM. Also, just a reminder, you will need to run Windows update if you do install the MSXML and .Net updates, because there are some specific Security Updates associated with these two components.

Who is the manufacture of your laptop? Like Gateway, Dell, HP? You would have to go there website and find the Express Upgrade on there. It's valid til' March I believe.

It is through DELL, which I recommend not buying anything from them

If you really want Vista, it's best to wait until pretty much all the bugs have been ironed out.

There is a Service Pack 1 coming out soon btw.

Or if you must have it, you can configure your computer to dual-boot XP and Vista.

What OS or program doesn't have bugs? I haven't had any problems with Vista. Runs a lot smoother than XP ever did. Fiji will be out the second half of this year. However this (and more) all that will be in the Service Pack. I mean you can download them now, if you're having the specific problems.

No, but you can "test drive" through Internet Explorer.

Mike, I'm quite aware of the fact that OS and programs at hard launch have bugs and that is precisely the reason why I sometimes wait.

Furthermore, because I primarily use my rig for gaming that has an Nvidia vid card which, atm, has significant Vista driver issues, I'm not willing to go through the headache of having to download said patches and whatnot --- but thanks for the link though, much appreciated.

As a gamer, I am looking forward to what DirectX 10 has to offer but you know as well as I do, that there aren't, as yet, games that support this, save for a few, and it'll be sometime late in the year perhaps when more developers will take DirectX 10 into account.

One such DX 10 game I'm looking forward to is Crysis however! All you FPS lovers out there, you know who you are (BPanther, for one); from the developers of Farcry this is one title to look out for! Now was it March or April?.... darn, offhand, I can't remember.....
