I am absolutely rubbish with maps and directions. Can someone tell me how I work out which direction Lara is facing at any given time? I've looked at the map page, noted the swirly wheel thing in the corner, the pointing arrow that represents Lara's position, but I can't see N, E, S, or W. Besides, I need the knowledge in game, when she's running about every which way (and I'm following someone's terrific walkthrough which mentions compass points, super wt so far, thanks Stella)

I don't believe that there's a compass (not one that I used anyway), and the swirly wheel in the bottom left corner of the map screen seems to be decorative. There's no HUD in the game to speak of besides an ammo counter during combat, so there's no compass during actual gameplay.

When I'm trying to navigate I just open the map frequently to make sure I'm still pointing in the same direction (I have no sense of direction whatsoever). You can use the map to set a custom waypoint when you highlight objects, which will glow when you press the survival instinct button though.

Thanks shrensh. I finally decided that on the map. up in North, down is south etc! And experimenting with turning Lara by degrees, I realised that her green arrow does the same thing. doh! I panic at the sight of a map, so it's taken me this long to simply use my brain and work it out.

When I refer to map directions in my walkthrough, that's what I mean. North is up, west is left, etc. Since, as Shrensh said, the in-game map doesn't actually tell you which way is which, I'm just making the assumption that North is up. Probably worth a mention in the text. But I also try to give landmarks in the scenery when I can.

Not only does the in game map not tell you what direction is north, there is no indication while you are moving around what direction is what. I expected at some point for Lara to get a compass.
