Is the Colosseum level shorter now?

Featured Replies

I'm not entirely sure about its length as in the time and/or tasks to be completed as I'm not done with the level yet (I just got past

the two gorillas and two lions that come out when you open the door near the statue

), but it's definitely smaller. I remember playing the original and when I got to the Colosseum, I literally just stopped and panned the camera around. It was so huge and beautiful! This incarnation is certainly beautiful, but it's comparatively diminutive size doesn't "feel" as awe- and fear-inspiring. To me, anyway.

I don't mean the physical size of the colosseum, I meant the length of the level: there was more to do in the original TR1 version!!

I just finished it, and yeah, you're right. Wow. I'd guesstimate it to be about a third as long as the original (it's kind of fuzzy because of how often I died in the original Colosseum, heh).

I realized you weren't talking about the physical size, though. Just wanted to mention it. :> While I'm thinking about it, though--as well as there being a lot more things to do in the original one, is my memory failing me or were there a lot more things to see, also? Aside from the entire underground cell-things, there were murals and frescoes and things. This one seemed more--eh--bare-bones, to me.

and more Bats and a Rolling Boulder and remember the pillar room with the pressure pad that activated a timed door high up with the secret?

I loved that!!

Aye.. a lot shorter.. the cistern and the tomb of theocan have also been shortened and merged. Palace Midas is also a lot shorter. In general I like what they've done. The layouts are a bit more logical now and they've kept all the best bits, and created some cool puzzles.

Hee. Oh, gods, yes--that was the bane of my existence for so long! And yet it was so fun!

I can agree with that. I do like that the levels make somewhat more sense (though the random appearing of animals in rooms I just ran through still baffles me; darn teleporting animals ;) ), but I think a bit of grandeur was lost in the re-sizing. With things being so comparably small (size-wise), there's not as much sense of "oh holy <bleep>". At least, that's how it seems to me.

I was quite shocked when I suddenly reached the end of the level! It was waaaaaaayyyy shorter than the original, which I, personally, found rather disappointing. Though all the fights were pretty full-on, I for one, would've enjoyed a much larger level. And what was with all that creaking in the cage rooms down below? I thought there was something or someone (Pierre) waiting for me, but it came to nothing after all that....
