Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

This is the 19th MCU (Marvel Comics Universe) movie and you have to need to see the previous 18 films to get a bit of an idea of where all those characters in this film fit into this movie and where they came from and what they were doing in their last appearances in their own movie franchise series like Thor Ragnarok and Captain America and Spider Man and Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and so on.

Plus if you don't watch this one, you won't be able to watch the direct sequel Avengers: Infinity War 2 (YES! They left the ending as a cliffhanger) and Captain Marvel, both of them coming out next year.

Honestly I haven't seen but maybe a bit more than half of the previous 18th films so I was lost half of the time.

All these Marvel and DC comic books movies one after another every year are getting very annoying.

The only part of the movie I liked was when he and his "team" jumped out of the airplane and the scenes immediately following it - don't want to spoil it.

The rest of the movie was just boring and uninteresting.

I didn't care for the plot.

We knew at the time in the early 1980's that a nuclear war was imminent between the U.S. and Russia. It wasn't a matter of whether Russia was going to nuke us, it was a matter of when.

But no one has ever told us what the result of a nuclear war would be like until The Day After was shown on TV in primetime in everyone's living room.

It shocked us!

In 1980, the U.S. was still recovering from a long economic depression, high interest rates, high unemployment, a weakened U.S. Military and a diminished U.S. Global Power after the Vietnam War, Americans longed for better times, brighter future for their children, a stronger economy, more jobs.

Americans wanted to live and prosper again.

Here comes Ronald Reagan, not only did he brought jobs and wealth, he also made the U.S. strong again militarily by spending an unheard and unprecedent $1 trillion on defense.

But the spectrum of a nuclear war still loomed over us and when The Day After was broadcast, people had a new attitude: to live every day like it was the last day.

That's why the 80's became the decade of excess: wealth, junk bonds, credit card debts, Madison Avenue found a new customer they could advertise to and make millions off from in the stores and malls: the teenage girls and teenagers.

We said: you know if we are going to be nuked tomorrow, we might as well live it off today and spend and spend and spend - after all, we are going to die so screw it, it's just money and debt.

We, the 20's something generation of the 80's invented wanting more, over spending, high credit card debts, and living materialistically and financially beyond our means.

We lived our lives the same way the music videos being shown on MTV were: quick images edited together and played back fast and furious.

I remember watching this movie on TV with my family and I was 18 at the time.

It was what every one talked about for weeks and months after.

Nicholas Meyer actually filmed almost 4 hours of material (not including added commercials breaks) and wanted it to make it a 2 part TV mini-series.

But ABC Network TV couldn't find anyone to advertise and sponsor it for primetime broadcast unless they agreed to trim out a lot of violence, shocking and disturbing scenes, and cut it down to about 2 hours for a single night broadcast.

Hence why it gotten poor reviews by critics about the editing and continuity and being disjointed as a whole but even with all that material missing, it still had the power to shock audiences.

Now this won't seem so shocking anymore.

In the past 35 years since this was broadcast, we have seen many nuclear wars and apocalypse end of the world movies and TV series but The Day After will always be one of their grandfather leaving a cinematic legacy and impact  for years to come.

The Meg (2018)

I had been looking forward to this for some time. I have all of the books and totally enjoy them. This had the potential to  be like Jaws but they decided to simply make it a popcorn flick. There was one thing in the trailers that spoiled part of the movie. Fortunately it had some really good CGI as well as the 3D production.

Both the director and Statham are not happy with the final cut.

I had heard it was cut down for a pg-13 release but didn't realize at first it was the studios doing. I can't really say I'm surprised, they will do stuff like that all the time. I just came across some links that tell of what you said, Jason and Director not happy.

I did hear tho' that the director has said there won't be a director's/Uncut version.

Ocean's 8 (2018)

This is supposed to be a heist caper movie... really? A street level 2 bit petty thief could had done what it took 8 women to do without all that glitz and shine and constant talking into earphones, oh the horror of seeing shot after shot of them talking into earphones and being very conspicuous about it!

 

It's also supposed to be a comedy movie... really? Not one scene was funny unless you still have the immature asinine moronic mentality of an 3 year old and you still find enjoyment in watching Anne Hathaway with her head over a toilet bowl and puking her guts out.

It's also supposed to be a thriller... really? There were no thrills, no suspense, no sense of impeding doom or menace that they were going to be caught or that the law was nipping at their heels 1/2 a step behind them.

This movie is yet another Hollywood's failed attempt to remake or reboot a movie, rewrite its original strong male cast by replacing with a female cast and celebrate woman's power.

There is nothing wrong with that, if you give the female characters something interesting and intelligent to do, it will work fantastically well:

i.e. the recent Wonder Woman and Atomic Blonde.

BUT nope, the writers of this film chose to write lazy shallow characters just for the sake of writing female characters like we have seen in the recent Ghostbusters or the many Melissa McCarthy's movies laced with juvenile locker room and toilet humor.

Finally, this is also another attempt by Hollywood to be politically correct: let's make sure we have a token Black character (or two), a token Hispanic character, a token Asian character (or two): after all, we don't want to alienate any race, do we?

This should had been called Ocean's Meh instead of Ocean's 8.

Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter, all great actresses in their own right who have over the years, proven themselves over and over again to be talented at making great films, should be ashamed for agreeing to do this farce just for the sake of bringing a bunch of actresses together.

I bet Ol' Blue Eyes is rolling in his grave right now after seeing how a politically correct female enpowered driven Hollywood has turned his beloved movie premise into a piece of celluloid garbage.

If any of you think I am on a personal agenda against female characters driven movie, you will be deadly sadly wrong.

I am not the only male (and female) who thought this latest entry into the forced female remakes stunk:

Hereditary (2018)

When I saw this movie's preview trailer for the very first time, I knew this was going to be good.

After a long string of PG-13 horror wannabes containing cheap thrills,
the horror genre has finally gotten its well deserved and long overdue R rated entry.

Watch this in a pitch dark room but don't watch it alone!!

If you don't get one bit scared while watching this, it means you are already dead.

The Meg (2018)

Not much to see here unless you really want to see what kind of crappy CGI a $130 million budget buys.

The only character in it that does anything is Jason Statham and the Asian lady - she is in it because this is another Hollywood Made In China movie.

The other characters are just there to fall in the water and swim in panic while The Meg is chasing them and maybe they will get to safety before they are eaten.

There are 2 other women characters in it: Jessica McNamee and Ruby Rose.

One plays Jason Statham's ex wife and the other is the designer of the underwater marina station and they both don't do much besides again, swim, swim, before The Meg eats them.

Watch (or rewatch) Jaws 1975 instead with NO CGI and a mechanical shark that was way ahead of its time.

I have attempted to watch this for the 4th time since I got it 3+ weeks ago.

I just can't get into it.

I will watch maybe 10 minutes at the most if even that much and lose interest.

It's classified as a Thriller and so far it hasn't thrilled me.
