Shrensh, your screenshots are priceless!

Congrats to those of you who've finished! I'm still plodding along in Egypt but having lots of fun. Just finished the 2 Khamoon levels. Again, I love the way the designers have stacked and intertwined all the rooms and hallways so cleverly. It gives me even more respect for both pro and amateur level designers. What a challenge.

No major discoveries to report, but I did make a few changes to my walkthrough, including a cool new shortcut to the second secret in the Obelisk level, which was pointed out to me by another player. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't gotten there yet, but you're welcome to check my page for the details. It's simple enough, but for some reason I just never thought of it.

And, in the City of Khamoon level, I finally used Paul Walton's position editor to get Lara up on that green ledge at one side of the cat temple area. There's nothing much going on there, but I always wanted to see for myself. Here's the spot:

OK, thanks very much to Stella's help I am now able to get TR1 working on my PC and for the first time I'll be able to play the Gold version! Yay!

So I started yesterday and managed to finish the first Peru level and am about halfway through the second level. I have relied quite heavily on Stella's walkthrough.

My main problem at the moment is that the walk keys don't work very well. I have a laptop and have a usb keyboard plugged in. The problem is that the ordinary cursor keys don't seem to work. I can use the number keypad but I'm not as comfortable with them. I also have problems trying to get her to walk forward. I have to start her running then press the shift key.

Still I'm realising again that in spite of the clumsy graphics the game is much more sophisticated than most of the newer games which look beautiful.

You need to do a 'full edit' and not a 'quick edit'. Small bug we didn't fix yet. I merged both posts for you!~~BP

Something went strangely wrong when I tried to edit my last post.

It said thanks to Stella I am now able to play TR1 and the Gold version at that (which is a first for me!).

I've played through the first two levels and got all the secrets, and I'm just entering the Lost Valley.

It's a brilliant game and it must be about five years since I played it so it all feels unfamiliar which is great.

That's too bad about the keyboard. It probably won't be an issue in the early levels, but there are some tricky jumping sequences later on, where fine control will matter more. Are you not able to use the laptop's normal keyboard because the keys are too small/close together? I'm playing on a laptop as well, but the keyboard is pretty large. It doesn't have a numeric pad on the side, but I don't really need any of those controls. I just reassigned Look to the Tab key and sidestep to Z and X. Now all is well.

I totally agree with you about the clever design despite the primitive graphics. I remember being blown away in early '97 when I first saw the game. At that point it was leagues ahead of Doom and Quake, and there wasn't much else happening that even came close.

I haven't made much progress today. Partway into Sanctuary of the Scion and trying out different people's methods for getting the secret. BPanther: Thanks again for the screenshots. I'll definitely add your way of getting back to the sphinx to my walk. Excellent.

Man, I also started replaying TR1 before I noticed this thread! I'm kind of stuck at Sanctuary of the Scion, the golden door high up on the wall isn't open and I can't figure out how to open it. It's fun, replaying this. It's been so long, there's a lot I've forgotten, but I also remember a lot.

Welcome to the group gameplay! We hope you have fun!! The sanctuary of the Scion is really good (there's a post on an earlier page about the secret if you didn't get it yet). As far as I remember, you have some switches to pull before you can open that door at the top.

You've got two switches: one on a platform, easy to spot that opens a door on the ground; and one at the very top, left side of the sphinx. Look for those columns. You need to do a series of jumps before you can get to it.

I just finished Sanctuary of the Scion. I think I finally found the optimal path to complete it with the least backtracking (only one climb up the rock wall and one climb to the top of the sphinx). It only took me 10 years to figure it out. LOL

I incorporated BPanther's secret strategy into my walkthrough as an alternate method, but (no offense) I still prefer to go for it from the opposite side. That's just one of the many great things about this game: there are all kinds of "right" ways to do things.

Edit: I also added a crapload of screenshots--none as funny as Shrensh's though.

And the FMV after the level, where Lara jumps the Norton into the ocean...love it. Hope it's an interactive cut scene in Anniversary.

Hello Stella! I finished Sanctuary of the Scion thanks to your walkthrough, but it crashes with no error message when it tries to play the FMV. I'm using Glidos. Gonna look for a fix or a savegame so I can continue.

Edit - Finished the game. The final FMV didn't play, which was a bit of a letdown. But the one that reveals who Natla really is played just fine. I wonder if they're gonna develop the plot a bit more in Anniversary. I hope they give Lara someone to talk to, like Zip and Allister. She's so silent in the originals.

theres no zip and allistor, no headset (thank god), they done my head in in legend and made an already easy game even easier. i prefered the house where they didnt talk to you and you had to find the secrets on your own, the way you should in tr. plus hardly a faithful remake if the put zip and allistor in

I know a lot of people like it, but I have to admit I'm not a fan of the headset either. If they include it in the Legend sequel, I hope they'll let you turn it off or ask for hints only when you want them. It was tolerable in the VCI HQ levels in Chronicles because it wasn't overused and it seemed to fit the setting. For me, wandering through ancient ruins and hearing some dudes chattering in your ear just spoils the mood. I'd rather they do a something non-intrusive, like a journal or diary--something like Von Croy's notebook in AOD only better organized.

Edit: I do like knowing how many secrets there are before you reach the end of the level, though. Then, if you know you're missing some, you can look out more carefully, and if you know you have them all, you can relax a little.

I finished Natla's Mines a couple of days ago but haven't had a chance to post. I love that level. Come to think of it, I like all the levels where Lara loses her weapons, or doesn't have any to start (i.e., Ireland in Chronicles). I always feel kind of guilty killing the skateboarder. He looks like he's only 12. But I guess if someone comes at you with Uzis, you've got a right to defend yourself.

Atlantis really creeps me out, but here goes....

. these last two are my least favorite levels to play. How many gross, fleshy hallways with gross, scary mutants can you go through? But they do include some of my favorite movie sequences. Neither of you have one squirt of inventive juice in your heads. Wasters!" LOL Too bad the sound cut out for the cut scene just after that where she confronts Lara. Anybody know how to fix that?

It seems to me that the sound is out-of-sync with the FMVs, probably no more than 2 or 3 seconds behind.

Shrensh, Shrensh, Shrensh...wow, that's hard to say out loud 3 times fast. Your latest round of screenshots almost made me spew iced tea out my nose I was laughing so hard. The things you put poor Lara through. I'm such a wuss in comparison. I'd make Lara climb trees to avoid danger if there were trees you could climb. I even hit F6 to quick load before she hits the ground after a long fall.

Anyway, I finished the game a few days ago. Yay, me!

Still haven't started Unfinished Biz yet, but maybe this weekend. Rapierman, you're either really fast or you've got a lot of time on your hands...or both. Hi all.

Rapierman, my posts are clear to everyone that reads them and my PMs to you too. Your public complaining doesn't take you anywhere.

I've talked with Gia about this and we both agreed that we have enough group threads going. You can play all games if you want to. But having 7 threads just breaks the 'group' idea we like so much. Each one of us playing the game in our rhythm is what we do all the time. Playing it at the same time, with everyone else was and still is the goal of these threads and that's what Raek and I had in mind when we first started them.

I'm not planning to post more about this in the future. If you want to continue this, please PM me or Gia.

I hope this doesn't stop you from having fun in the current Group game play threads. We have one for TR 1, UF and TR 3. The thread for TR 2 can be opened when TR 1 is done for most players participating.

In my house we actually use "three screamer" as a slang term for a really high place you wounldn't want to fall off of. For example, when driving across a suspension bridge or hiking on a cliffside, my son or husband will say something like, "Wow, that sure is a three screamer."

I'm stariting TRUB today and hope to at least get through Return to Egypt. It's been a while since I played those levels. I remember being so thrilled when they first came out. It was like Christmas in...well, I think it was actually in December.

Oh cool I've been avoiding trailers and stuff like that now that the game is so close to being released. I want to remain unspoiled for most of it. I will, however, be grabbing the demo as soon as it becomes available.
