Thoughts on the Adrenaline Jump

Featured Replies

So most of us have experienced the game a bit now.. what do we think of this new addition? Does it mark combat more exciting or does it drive you up the wall? Or maybe you're undecided?

NB - it's worth at least waiting until you've completed 'the lost valley' level to form an opinion on this for reasons that will become apparant!

I am still not totally sure myself. I absolutely hated it until I got the hang of it. Now I don't mind it so much, but I dislike the way bosses requires it's use at some point. It seems a bit silly in some ways. Also, i feel it could put some people off the game. For example - my dad has played every TR game on the PC. He hasn't played this one yet, but I know he'd hate this new jump. He uses the keyboard and he's not that fast with it, so these quick manouvers aren't his cup of tea, and he'd never consider using a controller.

Overall, I am ok with them leaving it in the game, but I don't think they should make it a compulsory move for killing any bosses. You should be able to play the game without using it if it suits you imo (even if it makes the game harder)

Thoughts? :)

Actually once you get the hang of the adrenaline thing it's not about being quick, it's about standing your ground and being patient. If you approach it (as I did for ages) as a quick move you get it wrong. I've just killed the TRex in a couple of minutes with hardly any loss of life. The first time through I couldn't do this at all. I was trying too hard I think.

Well, I can safely say, I hate the adrenaline dodge. Only got it to work a couple of times in the first major use of it, but I did finally win the battle ;) I think I actually just wore him down.

I hope they change this in TR8 and make it an either/or option. Would be much simpler and make alot of players alot happier.

I can see how evil it could be on PC with a keyboard and PC. On PS2 it's really simple and becomes like second nature, however if I was playing it on PC I think I would have trouble figuring it out. I'd have to change buttons like I changed sprint from '/' to 'S' in TR4 and 5.

I agree with the necessity to use it with bosses...that does make it a bit more evil. Instead CD should have thought of loads of different ways to kill bosses instead of just one so that it suits a wide audience, and I totally agree with the 'either/or' option. Maybe this was just a test for CD to see if people liked it, and hopefully they will notice this for TR8!

I play the game on the PS2 and haven't really had a problem pulling the move off. I mess it up now and then, but not that often. That's just set-up for my opinion.

I really dislike it. It doesn't feel like it "flows" with the rest of the game, for me. It feels like "just" another Bullet Time rip-off. I can't say as I "hate" it, per se, but I'd really have been happier if it were left out of the game. For one thing, as others have mentioned, making it a requirement for so many bosses irked me. For another--think of the code required for it. Timing, animation, reactions, everything else--those computations could have gone into other things. I don't know what other things, but I'm sure even a few small additions--even graphical additions--would have been better than the Adrenaline Dodge.

Yeah I didn't like it as much either. I mean it was cool at first when you learned how it was done...but after that it was not anything to shake a stick at. If any boss should've required it, it was Natla....all she would've done is go around and blast you with fireballs if you didn't make her go into a rage.

Tis a good point.. I think the combat system (adrenaline dodge aside) could do with some work. I guess the adrenaline dodge was their way to make it better but the whole thing feels very fake. Some physics when you shoot things might help (I.e. if you shoot something in the leg, you see its react specifically to that). Maybe a bit more blood too (with the option to disable it for people who aren't quite as gory!). Oh and some half-decent AI would be nice but I'm going off on a tangent...

I really don't like it. It is kinda hard to do on a keyboard for one thing. If they are going to have a boss in the game have it at the very end,not in each/at the end of each level.

Sounds good, just go ahead and get rid of the adrenaline dodge .

I like the adrenaline dodge but i agree it is unrealistic and its kinda stupid how if you jump towards the enemies in the adrenaline dodge your about to go over them and they jump and you kinda fly backwards sometimes in slowmo  And if you get a enemy full of rage and you go round the corner in twisting corridors places between tombs (Palace Midas) they kinda get stuck. So if you run towards them the adrenaline dodge comes at a unexpected point. And why im ranting the way that Lara pulls her self up the ledges is unrealistic In legend it is physically more possible and the noise she makes is annoying does she have to do it for everything? Jumping, climbing, attacks, falling only the attacks and falling seem realistic. And I thought there were going to be new death animations the only new one was kind midas' hand other wise they were the same as Legend. And if Lara falls from the perch move she lands on her feet  was Lara a cat in a pastlife? she should be on he back winded gasping for breath

I' ve finished now

You can rant all you want... just be more careful with the language you use ;) ~~BP

Exactly. I definitely think it could have been pumped into the AI. In one level, I was cornered by four animals--and got out with minimal loss of life. I realize I was playing on Easy, but I literally was cornered. I should have had to seriously pay for my mistakes. That and the blood. I mean, it's just silly to watch yourself pump some creature full of lead, but--have the bullets just disappear, I guess. The animals don't even react all that much to the shooting.

Agreed.

personally, i hate it! I honestly don't even know if I was doing it right in the Lost Valley - I only know it took forever for the T-Rex to go down - I'm probably doing it wrong - I thought you jumped when the screen goes blurry - I did this a few times - but I didn't really understand the 'headshot' thing, as the head came up as a target anyhow - I dunno, but any tips would be most welcome.

Depending on your targeting configuration (Advanced Toggle, Default, whatever else), you might have to hold the holster/unholster button down. Either way, when the screen blurs and everything starts to slow down, hold a direction and hit the Crouch button. Two reticules will come in from the sides. When they meet and turn red, you should hear a beep. Hit the Shoot button right then.

thanks Phantom! I did this, but nothing ever seemed to happen - I must be doing something wrong.

A tip for getting the dodge right in boss fights. As soon as the rage is up I start side flipping without firing that way when the time comes to make the dodge you are already dodging. I found that unless I did this with the TRex all that happened was that I would crouch.

Mary

I don't mind the adrenaline dodge move now that I know how to get it to work (most of the time anyway... I am very clumsy and press dodge and fire too soon...). The game could have been a little move informative on how to get it to work though, it seems that loads and loads of people are having great difficulty.

The move that I absolutely loathe and despise though is the one where you have to wall run and jump backwards. That single move caused me the most stress out of anything in the whole game.

I like the dodgy flip thingie-it kinda reminds me of the move in legend where you jump off an enemy's head and it goes into slow motion which you do out of choice...so like some ppl were saying that you could make this an optional move.

But still lol i just like a load of special effects like the interactive cutscenes that no-one else likes either :rolleyes:<_<

I actually liked that move, once I figured out how best to do it. That made more sense, to me, and "fit" the over all game, as well as simply implemented better, much better than Bullet Time did. The Max Payne and Matrix games can have Bullet Time all they want, and it more or less makes sense (if not implemented all that well, either). If they made it a purely optional move like Emily was saying, where it wouldn't really harm someone to not use it, I'd be happy. I'd rather those computations go to other things, but I'll compromise. :)

I HATE IT

I never used it in Lost Valley, i killed the angry dino just by jumping around and using all my medipacks, lol. And i even managed to do it from the first time (not easy mind).

**POSSIBLE SPOILER**

The first time i was forced to use the stupid dodge thing was with the horsemen in Tihocan. It took me ages to do it. Maybe it's not too bad on PS, but it's almost impossible with keyboard, you need at least three arms to do it properly! Ahh, and i KNOW that i'll have to use it again in future... i hate bossess

As others have said, re-map the controls. I've yet to hear of any PC gamer having a big problem with the move after they alter the controls to something more suitable.

i really like the move... I used to really suck at it before fighting the trex but once i started playing the boss i learned how to actually use the dodge. Once you get the hang of it it is a piece of cake, then again it is on the ps2.

I kinda like it and hate it at the same time. I like it in boss fights. With the T Rex, you were in a big, open area so it was easy to roll out of the way without something getting in your way. In normal fights, though, i think its SO useless. In Qualopec's tomb, i wanted to murder the freaking thing. Most of the enemies in that level charged at you in hallways, with dart traps and/or pits behind you, so there was really no where to roll. And if theyre more than one enemy, id always end up rolling away from one and into the second one.

I liked the jumpy-flippy slow motion move in Legend a lot better. You could control when that one happened, and wouldnt get eaten if you didnt use it.

Thats true but it made the game far too easy maybe if it was speeded up and maybe some new moves from Like when she vaults from the person with her hands she she twists to fall feet first maybe just a up-side down fall that goes into a roll?

I *despise* it. >_<

It seriously drives me insane. Its really hit or miss aswell... sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Its just stupid.

It's all in the timing I discovered...if I get all hypered up I press a button too soon...Christie is able to do it too... :woho:
