Death Wish (2018) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1137450 In 1974, a movie about an ordinary New York man turned vigilante after his family were attacked by criminals took the world by storm. The timing of that film was perfect at the time when New York city was the epitome of high violent crime rate, when most people in the USA were fed up with the system especially after the turmoil and chaos of the 1960's while this country was still looking for a way out of the Vietnam War and to heal from the causes and effects of it. It was a dark social criticism of the way things were then. Fast forward 44 years later, someone decided to remake the film starring Bruce Willis. That someone is director Eli Roth, known for the Saw and Hostel horror franchises. The premise of the movie is the same as the original, but the times have changed and the timing of this movie's release, originally scheduled for November and pushed back until now is horrible - at a time when this country has been affected by mass shootings after mass shootings and heated national debates rage on on how to solve this country's problem of gun violence. In the original film, Charles Bronson's Paul Kersey was a New York city architect. In this remake, Bruce Willis' Paul Kersey is a Chicago surgeon. After seeing so many action films in the past 30 years starring Bruce Willis as the hero (or anti-hero) who easily dispatches the bad guys without hardly any effort, it's difficult to take Willis seriously. Heck! This could had very easily been a Die Hard movie with a smaller body count: if the title card was changed from Death Wish to Die Hard 6, you would not had known the difference. Also how many similar movies with similar "Vigilante Revenge" premises of one person taking out a lot of bad people single handedly have we seen since 1974? Too many! The Taken franchise, Denzel Washington's The Equalizer, Jodie Foster's The Brave One, Robert De Niro's Taxi Driver and many others including Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2 have sort of desensitized us and made us impervious to the impact of such movies. 2/5

I am waiting for Sears to go under. The only reason they haven't is the company been borrowing millions and millions from their own CEO to stay afloat: almost $1 billion and at same time they sold their Craftman brand to Black and Decker for $900 million. But if you were to walk into most any Sears stores right now, you will find empty shelves, merchandise with very high prices that needs to be updated, no employees anywhere in sight. In the last 7 years, Sears has quietly without any out of business sales fanfares closing stores: over 2,900 Sears and K-Mart (same company) stores have closed leaving only around 555 Sears and K-Mart stores in the entire USA.

I watched over a one week period, all 9 episodes of the Dutch TV mini-series Tabula Rasa https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5197860/ What a fantastic and suspenseful horror show. Every episodes has clues meant to either give you pieces of the puzzle to solve the big mystery or to throw you off. Each time a major revelation is unveiled, I didn't see it coming and I would never had guessed it. When everything is revealed in the 9th and final episode, I still didn't get anything correctly and I am usually good at solving puzzles in mystery movies. It's now available on Netflix. 5/5

The High And The Mighty (1954) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047086 The Grandfather of all disaster's films. This movie gave birth to the Airport film in 1970 which was so successful, earning $100 million, it resulted in the Airport film franchise: Airport '75, Airport '77, The Concorde ... Airport '79 plus a whole trove of commercially successful (and some not very successful) 1970's disaster movies: The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake, The Towering Inferno, When Time Ran Out, The Swarm, Black Sunday, Rollercoaster, Two-Minute Warning, The Hindenburg, Avalanche, Gray Lady Down, Hurricane, Beyond The Poseidon Adventure, Meteor which consequently also resulted in the birth of the disaster spoof films Airplane! and Airplane II: The Sequel. The High And The Mighty was a movie that no one wanted to make. So much so that John Wayne ended up producing it himself and furthermore, when the main lead actor Spencer Tracy dropped out, he stepped in and took the role while still acting as producer. The script was not even written for Wayne and most of his lines in the movie were unscripted. The studio didn't have faith in this project and made sure mostly only B actors and actresses were hired in the supporting roles as to save money on the film's budget. But this film was so successful at the box office, number 10th at the box office in 1954 earning over $8.5 million against a budget of $1.47 million, it went on to become nominated for 6 Academy Awards and winning one. Actresses Joan Crawford, Ida Lupino, Barbara Stanwyck, Ginger Rogers and Dorothy McGuire all turned down the 2 female lead character because they found them unflattering: an aging former actress and a washed out beauty queen - the latter of the two was implied in the film that she had to resort to criminal activities to survive financially. Yet to everyone's suprise, both actresses were nominated for a Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar. John Wayne plays the veteran co-pilot, Dan Roman, who has to take over the control of the four-engine propeller-driven airliner when one of the engine catches fire and fails during a 13-hours flight from Hawaii to San Francisco. The Captain of the airliner, a pilot much younger and less experienced than Wayne, loses his nerves and wants to ditch in the Pacific ocean but Wayne slaps the hell out of him to bring him back to his senses. The Captain is played by a young Robert Stack (right): who went on to play Captain Rex Kramer (Remember Him?) who talks Ted Striker character into flying an airplane again after the entire flight crew is incapacitated by bad airline food in Airplane! 4/5

Tomb Raider (2018) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1365519/ Nearly 14 years and 8 months after Lara Croft, portrayed by Angelina Jolie, last appeared on the silver screen, the Tomb Raider movie franchise has been rebooted with new actress Alicia Vikander taking over as the world famous Tomb Raiding Adventuress. This is the origin story of how Lara Croft became a Tomb Raider. There are scenes that looked like they were lifted frame by frame from the 2013 Tomb Raider video game reboot and its 2015 sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider. It's easy to see why. This movie is co-produced by the same publisher of those 2 video games: Square Enix. Miss Vikander bring a level of freshness and youthness into the character of Lara Croft and she does a decent debut as Lara Croft. She is very athletic and physical like Lara Croft is in the video games. There were 2 scenes that left me breathless after watching them: I felt like I just ran the triathlon or I just spent a whole hour on the lifecycle at the gym. As far as the story goes, there were a few familiar set pieces we have seen before in a Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones, National Treasure and Mummy movie. But hopefully the next installment will feature a bigger, more daring, more adventurous, more polished story allowing Miss Vikander to grow and mature into the role of Miss Croft. The ending left the door open for a sequel but of course wether there is a next movie or not, it all depends on how well this film does at the box office domestically and internationally. 3.5/5

This is total Bull!! https://www.newsmax.com/thewire/student-suspended-gun-walkout/2018/03/16/id/849174/ Every student in every school that participated in the walk out should be suspended. Every school administrator that allowed their schools' students to walk out of the classroom for participate in political protests should be fired. This student did what he was supposed to do: go to school. If your kids don't show up for school, the school will call you asking where he/she is because they lose $ for each day a warm body is not in class. Here we have a case of a student that did go to school like he is supposed to and they still suspend him?

Annihilation (2018) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2798920/ Most of the positive reviews I've read online about this movie have one thing in common: it's visually stunning i.e. as in pretty but pretty does not make a movie good. It's the story that makes a movie good and the story in this movie is asinine right from the beginning part where the government send Natalie Portman and 4 women (a psychiatrist, a physicist, a geomorphologist and a paramedic) to go into an anomaly not from this world and investigate it. Now keep in mind that several fully trained military teams have entered that same alien anomaly before and only one soldier have returned barely alive at first and now in a coma nearing death. So here we have 5 women, one of them with prior military training having served in the U.S. Army for 7 years and the rest, well no military training at all - and they are all given firearms but not given any military escort or any transports. The anomaly covers a land mass area of several 100 square miles and these 5 women [and all the teams before them] entered it on foot. Where the APC? The military Hummers? Or even a couple of chopper! Plus one of them is a paramedic and how is a paramedic qualified to investigate and research something that's not of this earth? The rest of the movie just makes no sense. It's supposed to be a sci-fi movie but there is nothing sci-fi about it. Furthermore the movie ends with nothing explained: what was the anomaly? why were the aliens here? why did they mimic everything they touch? what did the aliens want? Then there are the plot holes, so many of them you'd wonder whoever wrote the script didn't bother to have anyone read it and check it for continuity and mistakes and logic before the actual filming began. Some of the reviews online said: amazing, thought provoking, unique. What the heck? Were these reviewers paid by the studio to said those things? Yes, it was amazing. An amazing waste of Natalie Portman and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Yes, it was thought provoking. It provoked me to think the many different ways the 5 characters on screen could hurry up and die so the movie would hurry up and end. Yes, it was unique. A unique piece of stupidity that should never had been made. I can't believe this is from the same director who gave us the great film Ex Machina in 2015. It's easy to see why this was released to Netflix: the audiences at test screenings didn't like it. The studio wanted the final cut changed with reshoots and rewrites and a new ending. The producer and director refused. The studio, Paramount, decided to not take the financial risk to give it a wide domestic theatrical release and gave it to Netflix after it was in a limited number of theaters for only 2 weeks. Filmed on the same jungle movie set that was later used for King Kong 1933, it tells the story of a self proclaimed Count living on a desolate Pacific Ocean island who hunts human beings as they were wild animals. Leslie Banks as the Count is creepy looking and he reminds me of an early cross between Vincent Price and Bela Lugosi and Count Dracula. A creepy, macabre and eye opening view of human nature and how the line between our nature as civilized man and our animalistic instinct to kill is very easily crossed. This is the first and indubitably the best of numerous film adaptations of the story which include the 1956 Run for the Sun with Richard Widmark, the 1993 John Woo's Hard Target with Jean-Claude Van Damme, 1987 Predator and 2010 Predators, Battle Royale, Westworld, The Hunger Games and The Running Man.
